Sure! This is the 4th time we have gone on this same short term missions trip. We basically help small christian congregations in Mexico build churches.
This year we put up a temporary church structure along with some bathrooms and we dug a well. The Church of the Living God congregation was in Iguala, Mexico. They had been worshipping in a home which was owned by a non-believer. They are about 50 worshippers and were asked to leave. So they bought some land outside of town. We donated the materials and our time and put up the initial structure for them. The congregation helps in the work too and they provide our lunches and dinners. We worship with them several times during the week too.
This church consisted of the most joyful, friendly group of Christian mexicans we have ever met. They were so delightful. We enjoyed them greatly. They asked my husband to preach (with about 5 minutes notice!) He had never preached before. So grateful there is a Holy Spirit. My husband leaned heavily on 5 minutes of prayer and it was wonderful. That was a highlight for me.
Most of the US team was from our last church. They were the challenging part for me. Wonderful people....but all over the board in their understanding of the gospel and what it means to be a Christian. Very wordly. Very ecumenical. I knew that going in, but it was harder than I thought it would be from a spiritual perspective. And we were disappointed in the missionary/pastor we go down to help. This is the second time he had a wide open opportunity to preach a strong message on the saving gospel and influence this group and he didn't do it. His testimony was disappointing as well. This kind of shocked both my husband and myself. Don't know if he was softening his message on purpose, or if he is drifting with everyone else.
But we love

the Mexican people we go to help. Each year the congregations we have helped have been better than the previous year. We love the work. We love to worship with them - very much in the Word, very much exalting Jesus Alone, very exuberant! And great opportunities to influence, plant seeds, and point people to the Word and the Truth on the teams we go with. But it was more draining and frustrating than I thought it would be......
