Senator Reid seeks offshore drilling re-evaluation

Who didn’t see this coming the day of the accident? IF I were a conspiracy-type minded person, my mind would be spinning and thinking of things like….oh….let’s say…why was THIS incident not immediately denied as a terrorist act? Why are there no cries of this being an “inside job” – like 9/11 which was blamed on Bush and the gov’t? But…then I am not the “conspiracy type”. :heh:

With President Barack Obama planning to open vast stretches of the coastline to oil and gas drilling, Reid said the worsening spill should be considered in any expansion.

“This terrible event will, undoubtedly, require us to re-examine how we extract our nation’s offshore energy resources and will have to be taken into consideration with any legislation that proposes to open new areas to development,” Reid, a Democrat, said in a statement.

The stalled climate change bill was expected to have provisions to spur expansion of offshore drilling, in a bid to shore up votes from Republicans.

The White House acknowledged on Thursday that the spill could force the president to rethink plans to increase offshore oil drilling, an essential component of legislative efforts to stem global warming.

Administration officials said Obama could change his support for the plan, depending on what was found to have caused the rig blast last week off Louisiana that left 11 workers missing, presumed dead, and led to the huge slick.

Reid, in a brief statement, said, “We will continue to follow the developments in the Gulf of Mexico closely.”

Putin stuns Ukraine with surprise gas deal

http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE63T4DH20100430

Since the election in February of Kremlin ally Viktor Yanukovich as Ukraine’s president, ties with Moscow have rapidly improved with accords on gas pricing and a lease extension for a key Russian naval base in Ukraine’s Crimea.

But Prime Minister Vladimir Putin’s proposal was Russia’s boldest move yet and would allow Moscow to control its gas transit to Europe. Ukraine’s opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko said the deal was part of “a plan to destroy Ukraine.”

“It is not a merger based on partnership but Russia’s full acquisition of Ukraine,” Tymoshenko said in a statement posted on her party’s website. “The Crimea was just the beginning.”

The deal would at a stroke give Moscow control of the major gas pipelines which run through Ukraine to supply Europe, as well as a lockhold over Ukrainian domestic gas supplies.

Owned by the state, Naftogaz is the exclusive importer of Russian gas into Ukraine and about 20 percent of the EU’s gas needs flow through its pipelines.

Weafer said Gazprom’s size meant it would completely dominate any joint company. “And that would be unacceptable to the Ukrainian public,” he added.

The fiery opposition leader Tymoshenko called for the creation of a “committee to save Ukraine.” She called for mass protest rallies starting May 11 to depose Yanukovich. (BNL: :whisper: Watch your back, check for car bombs, careful “how” you fly…..)

Gazprom’s CEO Alexei Miller said the firm was ready to consider an asset swap with Naftogaz in business segments ranging from exploration to sales. “In reality, that’s the question of a merger of the two companies,” he said.

US: Proximity talks to begin next week

Back on track? US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said on Friday she expects Israeli-Palestinian proximity talks – indirect discussions through US mediators – to begin next week.

“We will be starting with proximity talks next week,” Clinton told reporters, saying US special envoy George Mitchell would be returning to the Middle East.

Clinton said the US expected an Arab foreign ministers meeting on Saturday to endorse the new talks, which would give Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas political cover to resume indirect negotiations.

“Ultimately we want to see the parties in direct negotiations and working out all the difficult issues,” Clinton said during a meeting with visiting Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammad al-Sabah.

“They’ve been close a few times before,” Clinton said. “So we are looking to see the resumption of those discussions.”

One Abbas aide, Saeb Erekat, said his side would await the results of the Arab foreign ministers meeting on Saturday as well as of a Palestinian Liberation Organization executive committee next week.

Kuwait’s Al-Sabah said he was confident Arab states would back the initiative to get talks back on track. “We support fully the position that the United States has taken,” he said.

US assurances to Abbas?

On Friday, State Department Spokesman Phillip Crowley said the US was “working around the clock to move forward with proximity talks. He added that the US hopes that indirect talks “will set the stage for a resumption of direct negotiations on all permanent status issues as soon as possible.”

As part of the efforts to convince the Palestinians to enter the talks, the US has given Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas private assurances, including an offer to consider allowing UN Security Council condemnation of any “significant new Israeli settlement activity,” the Guardian reported overnight Friday.

Iran to build third power plant in Syria

Iran to build third power plant in Syria

Iran is planning to build a 450-megawatt power plant in Syria, where Tehran has already constructed two other thermal power generation facilities.

“The construction of Syria’s third thermal power plant by Iranian technicians begins today,” IRNA quoted Mohammad Behzad, Iran’s deputy energy minister, as saying on Friday.

Briefing reporters in Damascus, Behzad said the combined cycle power plant will be built in the Syrian port city of Jondar and will have a capacity of up to 450 megawatts.

Iran’s Mapna Group Power Plant Industries won the tender for building the facility in late 2009 and consequently signed a contract worth USD 400 million with the Syrian Electricity Organization PEEGT.

Behzad said the first unit of the Jondar power plant will become operational in 2011 and the other parts of the facility are scheduled to join Syria’s power grid in 2012.

“The 275-million-euro Jondar project was awarded to the Iranian company, after Mapna Group’s satisfactory performance in the construction of the Teshrin power plant in Syria,” Behzad noted.

The Iranian official added that 75 percent of the Teshrin project has been completed. ……
